Salute the hidden gems of New York: Your personal tour of the Big Apple
In April 2011, my (then very new) husband and I had the opportunity to visit New York for the first time. The Big Apple was somewhere that we both wanted to visit as long as we could remember, and what better time to take our first trip as our honeymoon? While our friends and family all came with various excellent suggestions, which was one that stuck in our mind the most for a Big Apple Greeter application.
So what are the Big Apple Greeter is all about, I hear you ask? As their website, with a Big Apple Greeter, you see New York through the eyes of New Yorkers. To act in a volunteer service since 1992, a native of New York as a tourist guide of the city show visitors to their neighborhoods and provide an overview of where they might not otherwise have found. Visits are also “private” in the sense that there is a guide for a couple or a small group considered – no trouble hearing the tour guide before the scum of a large group! Therefore, as our friends spoke so enthusiastically about the service, we decided to apply a greeter for our first trip to the city.
Unfortunately, the amount of Greeters in the application (which in itself shows how popular it is?) We had our greeter!
On the morning of 19th April 2011, we met our Greeter, Clyde, in our hotel lobby.
Clyde showed us around Brooklyn Heights, and explains the different types of houses in the neighborhood. Here we visited the Meat Packing District trend and went to Washington Square Park, with specialties like Magnolia Bakery, in Sex and the City, along the path.
At the end of the tour, Clyde was kind enough to take in the right direction of a coach for us, the New York Public Library and Grand Central Station, although we have always planned to visit the Grand Central Station, we had not have been New York Public Library and its large internal Greeter without our help.
Unfortunately, as the Big Apple Greeter is a non-profit organization, it relies on donations from the public. I hope that the organization is able to offer its visitors other Greeters of the city for many years to come.
